What dumbbell weights should women over 40 use at home?

There isn’t one correct dumbbell weight for women over 40. Age alone doesn’t tell us your strength, your experience or how a particular movement feels. A useful starting point is a conversation about you.

Choose for the exercise, not the label.

The weights you use for a squat may feel quite different in a shoulder raise. One movement might feel comfortable while another needs a lighter load or a different version. You don’t have to use the same dumbbells for every exercise in a session.

That’s why buying a weight simply because it’s sold as a “beginner” option isn’t always helpful. Tell your coach what you have, what you’ve used before and whether any movements concern you.

Look at how you move.

You want a load you can control through the version of the exercise you’re doing. If you’re swinging to get the weight up, losing your balance or rushing to finish, pause and ask for guidance. A lighter weight, fewer repetitions or an adaptation may be a better starting point.

Equally, you don’t have to stay with your first weights forever. As movements become more familiar, discuss how to make them more challenging. The NHS advises beginning gradually and building over time.

Buy what you need, when you need it.

If you already own a pair of dumbbells, start by checking whether they’re suitable for your trial. If you’re buying, consider how easily you can grip them, put them down and store them. An adjustable pair may suit some homes; separate pairs may suit others. You don’t need a particular brand to join Byrewell.

Ask before your first session.

Send me a note with the weights you own and a little about your experience. We can talk through your starting point before your free week. During LIVE classes, I explain the movements and offer adaptations. You can keep your camera on if you’re comfortable doing so.

The useful question isn’t “What should a woman my age lift?” It’s “What helps me practise this movement well, at a suitable level for me?”
